Global Imaginary Field Trip
All classes participated in the Global Imaginary Field Trip project (GIFT), and followed the steps in the WISE research model (Wonder, Investigate, Synthesize, Express) to complete a class research project. This year's theme was "Rides and Roller Coasters." First, each class selected a different ride to research. Fifth graders focused on Thrill Rides, fourth graders focused on steel roller coasters, third graders focused on wooden roller coaster, second graders focused on water rides, first graders focused on Ferris wheels, and kindergarteners focused on carousels. Students then generated questions about their ride (Wonder). With assistance, students explored a variety of print and digital resources Mrs. Streng compiled into project "collections." We looked for answers to our questions in books, in databases like EBSCO and Worldbook, and on websites found by conducting searches through the KidzSearch search engine (Investigate). Mrs. Streng took notes for students in kindergarten and first grade, and students in second through fifth grade took their own notes and cited their sources using a note taking tool (Synthesize). Students were shown different presentation options and chose the best presentation format to showcase their information. Finally, students worked to organize and combine their research into a finished project for their class (Express).
